Where did the old site go? Hazards of server migration

You may notice that the look of this site has changed and all the old content is gone. That is an accident. I did not jettison the old site on purpose.

My old site, never to be seen again.

Old site to new server… or not

Our hosting company asked us to migrate servers. In the server migration, my WordPress database for my old sitegot lost. If you’re not familiar with WordPress, that’s what stores all of the page data, including blog posts.

I (inadvisably) did not have a recent full backup. In fact, the backup I did have didn’t work because it was in a proprietary format for a single app and that app failed to restore the old site.

Hard drive failed

It’s been particularly slow because my hard drive decided to start failing around the same time as the server migration. Since I do not have install media for Windows, support for Windows 7 ended in January 2020, and I hate Windows 10, I switched to Linux full time. My computer used to be dual boot Linux and Windows so I could use Adobe products like Photoshop and Premiere Pro. No more. I’ve had to relearn new editing programs for everything.

Less time to rebuid old site

In addition to that, we both intentionally and unintentionally cut back on childcare, so I’ve had less time to focus on creating content. I spent hours scraped together during naps, babysitting time, early mornings, and after bed creating the old site. I’m upset, to say the least, that it is all gone. I wrote it directly into WordPress because content doesn’t copy well from a text or Word-like editor in my experience. I may need to change my workflow going forward.

As I said, it’s been slow rebooting everything. I’ll be back on a more regular basis, rest assured. I just can’t say exactly when or how frequently yet as I recalibrate my workflow and work time. It won’t quite be like the old site. I hope it will be better.
